Matterform announces upcoming Spamfire update
Free update will offer many features requested by users

Matterform Media announced today an upcoming free update to Spamfire, Matterform's flagship anti-spam product. Spamfire 2.2, currently in development and scheduled for release in May 2006, includes many improvements requested by users.

Spamfire was originally released in April 2002. A re-written version 2.0 was released in April 2005. Version 2.0 featured a newly coded filtering engine that brought many new features to the product, such as self-training Bayesian filters.

However, version 2.0 used the same mail protocol code that was a part of Spamfire version 1. This code, adequate for the first few years of the product's life, has become more and more unwieldy, making it bug-prone and difficult to maintain.

Matterform is working now to finish version 2.2, which contains a completely re-written mail engine. The new mail engine will make Spamfire 2.2 the fastest and most reliable version of Spamfire ever released. Version 2.2 will be a free upgrade to all owners of Spamfire 2. Spamfire 1 users can upgrade for a special price.

Version 2.2 will fix several bugs that some users have been reporting recently, including:

  • Occasional 103 errors when checking mail.
  • Failure to log off from a mail server, reporting "Checking connection..." indefinitely.
  • Failure to remove mail from the mail server when instructed to do so by the mail client.

The new mail engine in Spamfire 2.2 will fix these problems and also provide general performance and stability improvements. And the well-designed code in the new mail engine will make it easier for Matterform to fix bugs and add features to future versions of Spamfire.

Spamfire 2.2 is currently being tested by Matterform Beta testers. The final release is scheduled for May 2006.
